The manga does address this later on, but within the anime, it’s never touched on and the fact that it’s later fixed doesn’t erase the large, uninteresting chunks of the show where Mei just doesn’t have anything going on with her. I’d think this video makes it quite clear that I don’t hate the show. Change ), You are commenting using your Facebook account. In this, she shares many of Yuzu’s good points, though with less immediately apparent flaws and an even more engaging personality. Lastly, I’m unsure how I feel about the melodrama. A huge problem with Class S is blaming the girls who participate in those relationships for the societal standards in which they’re raised and to some degree, Citrus feels like a part of that. I really wish I could love Citrus to its full extent. The festival has plenty of fun moments as Mei and Yuzu try their hardest to conceal their relationship from Suzuran before clumsily wondering off by themselves and getting caught. During this era, seeing ghosts is still a thing and it’s somewhat not that huge of a big deal. No longer able to deny her feelings for Yuzu, she quit the engagement when Yuzu proposed to her, to which Mei accepted. Yuzu is suddenly struck with inspiration. 10 minutes after Yuzu had left Mei left as well, she double checked her efforts for trying to cover up her hickey with make-up before she entered the Academy. And now, after more than 2000 words of praise, it’s time to look at what the show does wrong and why it’s not one of my favorite yuri anime or manga. Sweet. If you've made it this far, thank you for reading! Manager is also reintroduced at the end of the volume. The next scene shows a bored Matsuri wondering around alone. I’ll begin with what I like about it, just to make it abundantly clear that the show has a lot of good elements to build upon. I’d understand why this would give people reason to pause. It is revealed that Nene was too busy watching Harumin and Yuzu to notice Matsuri was also with her during the trip to the pool and the festival. The second scene is by far the most interesting as it explores the relationship (or lack of) between Mei and Harumin. "I'm not sure if saying "incredible" is the right term, Yuzupon. They fought for one another — and their village — right up until the end. Mei asks. Having Yuzu be so great is perhaps the biggest reason I like the series as a whole and one of the only reasons I was able to read the early parts in the first place. Combine this change with the lack of sexual assault and you’d end up with a Yuzu and Mei who have a solid place from which to begin their relationship while losing little to none of their current appeal. Damn her and her constant kindness. No, there is one other great character who nearly everyone appreciates, even those who truly hate the series. Matsuri first tries to ignore the girl but then changes her mind and approaches Nene. Now then, I will prepare dinner, we must give Suzuran's friend the best hospitality.". With season four of Attack on Titan set to premiere at the end of 2020 in Japan, there are so many questions still left unanswered that fans are dying to know. Remember, Yuzu is a girl who goes out and buys incest yuri manga to help teach her what she’s supposed to do once she realizes her feelings for Mei. It's just that the fans want some over others. I’m not totally sold on the way they do so, as it heavily implies that the feelings of the random mob girls are illegitimate just because they’re going to marry later. It might not be the worst yuri I’ve read, but I can also say that I’ve read well over a 100 manga which are better than it as well and this is especially true for the anime given that it adapted the worst content in the series. One thing that’s really enjoyable about her is how empathetic she is. Ume has a few scenes in this volume where she seems to know that Mei is in love and encourages her daughters to go to the festival together. Her claimed desire to get a boyfriend is the most transparently false statement in anime that I’ve ever seen. As a jujutsu sorc… This is a bit different for the anime, as the director is a man, but seeing as it’s a pretty straight adaptation I think the effect of that on the sexualization of the characters and assault is fairly minor. Episode 49 (on UK Netflix, although it's episode 50 elsewhere, not sure why I only have 49 episodes to watch but the same content, If anyone knows please let me know). Ask any fan of My Hero Academia and the odds are more than good that they have a favorite pairing for the series. All this is true. If anything, they’re mixed, leaning positive, particularly when you take the manga into account. Yuzu is simply out of her natural environment and not ready for the situations she comes into contact with. A common defense of this part and other instances of sexualization in the series is the fact that Citrus is written by a woman and published in a yuri magazine. Plus we don't see much closing interaction between the two outside of chapter title pages. But because there’s stuff that’s worth being invested in and because it’s one of the most well-known works in the genre, I have to treat it like a series which is actually trying to be good, so the rampant sexual assault causes serious problems. RELATED: 10 Anime Crossover Couples That Would Be Perfect For Each Other Many of those potential pairings revolve around the main character, Izuku Midoriya, aka … How would you rate episode 4 of. I'm also always curious of how much Ume actually knows about Mei and Yuzu's relationship. Btw I … It’s not a constant issue but it does hurt my enjoyment of the series quite a bit. I really have to give Citrus credit for having so many empathetic and caring characters in its main cast despite being a somewhat trashy soap opera. Fans didn’t realize how lucky they had it with the end of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 2.The close of the Amazon Prime series’ 2018 run was full of optimism. Works like Girl Friends, Kase-san, Aoi Hana, Hanjuku Joshi, Yuri Kuma Arashi, Flip Flappers, and many, many more all attack the tropes associated with the Class S movement. It’s easy to see why they became such close friends so quickly. The 25-year-old actress navigates her role as "The Chosen One" Alina Starkov with grace, humility, and really great hair throughout. It’s how much potential Citrus had to be a real masterpiece of a yuri drama that makes me annoyed by its failures so I think there’s a way to bring that potential out without making it a totally different work in every way. Make it a little more clear what’s meant to be emotional and what’s meant to be funny. The 25-year-old actress navigates her role as "The Chosen One" Alina Starkov with grace, humility, and really great hair throughout. They improve as time goes on of course but in their own arcs, I’d say they tend to be pretty one-note and often quite boring. Moments like her taking the time to understand Mei’s dad while also being upset at him for abandoning her are great. As it turns out, the two go to the school and are polar opposites, Mei is straightlaced, and Yuzu is more free-spirited. If Yuzu was wearing the same outfit every single day, it would be impossible to buy the idea that she’s a gyaru. ; Awesome Art: The manga has been praised for its art. She adds very little to the show from a thematic standpoint and her arc barely even advances their relationship given that Mei and Yuzu immediately reset things in the next arc. Matsuri is disappointed when the food arrives and it is revealed to be a "strange dish" of Nene's own creation. The next scene shows Harumin running in the rain while telling someone over the phone that she doesn't want to hang out with them all of the time. Yuzu insists that her trinkets are cute and offers numerous examples as proof, but Mei still disagrees. Despite the awkward conversation, the two both seem to appreciate Yuzu for entering their lives. Please provide any thoughts or theories you have in a comment or just message me directly. “it’s your turn now ‘wifey’” Yuzu laughed at hearing Mei using slang wording. The woman coldly explains. "Goodness, showing these emotions is disgraceful. She’s got an independent streak, for sure, but she’s a good kid who just wants to fit in with her friends and assumes that having a boyfriend is the way to do so. It’s hardly full of sakuga or anything but I never think it’s ugly. In fact, people who are able to see ghosts end up being asked to do all certain of ghost hunting jobs. Yashiro will end up happily with Hanako, and could possibly become another school mystery since Hanako has the powers to appoint supernaturals as one. But as one of yuri’s biggest flagships, and as a series which has pretty great writing at certain points, I’m going to hold it to a higher standard. Yuzu and Harumin are believably empathetic, kind people who make mistakes and aren’t perfect while still trying their best. Mei is a cute fair-skinned teenage girl with brown hair and brown eyes. The most interesting thing we learn is probably in Suzuran's explanation of how elite families send their daughters to the Aihara Academy. I wouldn’t say that you can’t successfully make a series where the protagonist is a bad person or annoying. Lastly, just tighten up the writing in a few places. All in all, Citrus is just a very solid production. It’s not that having a third party intervene is inherently a bad way of moving things along but when it’s how literally all of the progress is made, things start to feel stale and it begins to seem like the main characters aren’t capable of standing on their own two feet, which just isn’t enjoyable to read or watch. I simply wouldn’t watch a straight shoujo anime that does this stuff. If it were just totally trashy all the way through, with little to no redeeming elements, I wouldn’t care as much. Yuzu is definitely a somewhat naive character. Not only did she literally not know she was going to an upper-class all-girls’ school until she already arrived, she just generally doesn’t know what the hell she’s doing. If you haven't watched Meteor Garden (2018) yet, turn away now. A rollercoaster of emotions, makes me feel like … However, she does not only disappear, but she is also transported to the past, to the Meiji Era to be exact. As I said, my feelings are generally positive at this point, so my criticisms here are out of a genuine desire to see the series be better, not out of any bitterness or hatred. She’s likable for sure but she lacks the depth to stand out and I totally forgot about her after the fourth arc. Maybe out of respect, maybe out of fear, but Mei put her needs after Yuzu's. Citrus is an all-new yuri manga series that offers a bittersweet love story coupled with gorgeous artwork. Mei had called her sister to know what she would have liked for dinner and at the other end of the phone she answered all gleeful that it should have been her to choose the ingredients, so that, once home, Yuzu would have cooked whatever Mei liked. 2018. Mei will attack her, then it will end, Mei will either act like nothing ever happened or that she actually dislikes Yuzu afterwards, and then she and Yuzu work it out slowly over time, only to repeat again. A lot of this volume focuses on Yuzu and Mei's attempts to hide their relationship (and their rings) from others. A worse series would absolutely not make this a real choice. I won’t lie and pretend that the anime looks just as good as the manga because it doesn’t. A still from the 'Citrus' anime ED. Sara is an adorable angel, sure, but she takes that to the point that it’s hard to believe she could be that nice. ; Awesome Music: The opening for the anime adaptation, titled "Azalea. Mei in black (kurauko Story 13: two sisters (Mako Takahashi) Story 14: dead or love (kino kiyuki) Story 15: Hathews (yuki yukio) Story 16: have a bite (fujieda) Story 17: wait for sleep… (yayoi osawa) Citrus (Adapted from) Ask any fan of My Hero Academia and the odds are more than good that they have a favorite pairing for the series. That said, she’s not just constantly kind in every scenario. Not glorifying relationships based on assault is a part of that. She too engages in non-consensual actions which hurts my ability to like her. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Harumin and Mei are reluctant to open up to each other. I generally prefer my anime to have people move the events forward, not props. Citrus (stylized as citrus) is a Japanese yuri manga series written and illustrated by Saburouta. Characters are obviously going to be the driving force in a drama and that’s fine. Nene giggles when Matsuri becomes flustered when reminded of her previous comments about Harumin. Yuzu is absolutely excellent, standing as perhaps one of my favorite main characters in all of yuri despite Citrus being nowhere near that level. But it’s presented as an actual choice and Mei has serious reasons for wanting to follow in her family’s footsteps. While it’s the unadapted volume 5 that really gets into the weeds with this part of her characterization, some of it still shines through in the anime. She’s not very judgemental, she cares deeply about others, and she does her best to help out whenever the situation calls for it. It doesn’t matter how much it’s justified by the writing, if a relationship starts to lose your interest then it has failed, something which is obviously a large problem for a series founded upon romance. The first to cover, and perhaps the biggest as the writing goes, is that Mei is just not an interesting character in the material that the anime adapts. Yes I like how Yuzu and Mei end up together once more. But they go way too far and are way too frequent, not to mention the almost total lack of warning that it’s going to happen. Someone may claim that I’m singling out Citrus for this criticism because it’s gay, but the simple fact is I don’t watch or read all that much non-yuri romance. The two share a booth in a diner and Nene asks Matsuri who she was again. This video is not going to involve me attacking Citrus for its entire run, looking at every tiny flaw in an attempt to prove it’s an awful work. Getting most of his looks from Shikamaru, it’s not a surprise since he looks pretty bad ass. But that doesn’t actually make it justifiable. I… In a romance, it’s important for both partners to keep being interesting so that the relationship itself stays interesting. The outfits worn by these men have caused many fans to speculate that Suzuran's family is involved in organised crime as they look like Yakuza members. ._2YJDRz5rCYQfu8YdgB_neb{overflow:hidden;position:relative}._2YJDRz5rCYQfu8YdgB_neb:before{background-image:url(https://www.redditstatic.com/desktop2x/img/reddit_pattern.png);content:"";filter:var(--newCommunityTheme-invertFilter);height:100%;position:absolute;width:100%}._37WD6iicVS6vGN0RomNTwh{padding:0 12px 12px;position:relative} This relationship is mutually unhealthy and while that may be more realistic in certain ways, it just brings the whole thing down. Even when she expresses attraction to Amamiya, the framing makes it clear that this is different to her feelings towards Mei. Most likely, there will be a sequel, since there will be enough material (in any case, another manga called “ Citrus Plus ” has been released since December 2018). It wouldn't surprise me if she knew the whole time, she lives with them and Mei isn't exactly subtle this volume, and just wanted to wait for them to be ready to tell her. ( Log Out /  But that might be a good thing. Of course, this is fiction, so the series can easily write it so that their relationship does eventually become healthy but it stretches suspension of disbelief and makes it harder to be invested in their dynamic. I’m sad that this anime and manga isn’t as good as it could’ve been. ._9ZuQyDXhFth1qKJF4KNm8{padding:12px 12px 40px}._2iNJX36LR2tMHx_unzEkVM,._1JmnMJclrTwTPpAip5U_Hm{font-size:16px;font-weight:500;line-height:20px;color:var(--newCommunityTheme-bodyText);margin-bottom:40px;padding-top:4px}._306gA2lxjCHX44ssikUp3O{margin-bottom:32px}._1Omf6afKRpv3RKNCWjIyJ4{font-size:18px;font-weight:500;line-height:22px;border-bottom:2px solid var(--newCommunityTheme-line);color:var(--newCommunityTheme-bodyText);margin-bottom:8px;padding-bottom:8px}._2Ss7VGMX-UPKt9NhFRtgTz{margin-bottom:24px}._3vWu4F9B4X4Yc-Gm86-FMP{border-bottom:1px solid var(--newCommunityTheme-line);margin-bottom:8px;padding-bottom:2px}._3vWu4F9B4X4Yc-Gm86-FMP:last-of-type{border-bottom-width:0}._2qAEe8HGjtHsuKsHqNCa9u{font-size:14px;font-weight:500;line-height:18px;color:var(--newCommunityTheme-bodyText);padding-bottom:8px;padding-top:8px}.c5RWd-O3CYE-XSLdTyjtI{padding:8px 0}._3whORKuQps-WQpSceAyHuF{font-size:12px;font-weight:400;line-height:16px;color:var(--newCommunityTheme-actionIcon);margin-bottom:8px}._1Qk-ka6_CJz1fU3OUfeznu{margin-bottom:8px}._3ds8Wk2l32hr3hLddQshhG{font-weight:500}._1h0r6vtgOzgWtu-GNBO6Yb,._3ds8Wk2l32hr3hLddQshhG{font-size:12px;line-height:16px;color:var(--newCommunityTheme-actionIcon)}._1h0r6vtgOzgWtu-GNBO6Yb{font-weight:400}.horIoLCod23xkzt7MmTpC{font-size:12px;font-weight:400;line-height:16px;color:#ea0027}._33Iw1wpNZ-uhC05tWsB9xi{margin-top:24px}._2M7LQbQxH40ingJ9h9RslL{font-size:12px;font-weight:400;line-height:16px;color:var(--newCommunityTheme-actionIcon);margin-bottom:8px} The three people we see in Suzuran's house are quite interesting. She tells them about her encounters so … "Take responsibility for the Shiraho name." It would’ve been just as easy to write her as mostly the same person but not conducting acts of sexual assault every other chapter. Saburouta is a woman and while I don’t know if she’s gay or not, I don’t find her works to be particularly male-gazey. More Mei and Yuzu in their cute cat forms - Plus chibi Suzuran in a bird costume! Shadow and Bone is Jessie Mei Li’s first major role, but you wouldn’t know it from watching the show. The other side characters fare a bit better, but only a bit. The truth of the matter is, there are dozens of potential pairings. Still, it makes it clear that the main cast’s feelings are valid and come from their sexual orientation and not simply the fact that they attend a one-gender school, so it’s certainly better than it theoretically could’ve been without that clarification. Another great element of Citrus is the art. Generally, as I said, it does a good job, understanding that there needs to be a healthy mix of humor and emotion. This is an important step in establishing that Yuzu is not a mostly straight girl who happens to fall in love with Mei but a lesbian who just didn’t realize it until falling in love with Mei. Citrus may have checked another box off on its run through the romance basics, but we’ve got quite a few more to go. @keyframes ibDwUVR1CAykturOgqOS5{0%{transform:rotate(0deg)}to{transform:rotate(1turn)}}._3LwT7hgGcSjmJ7ng7drAuq{--sizePx:0;font-size:4px;position:relative;text-indent:-9999em;border-radius:50%;border:4px solid var(--newCommunityTheme-bodyTextAlpha20);border-left-color:var(--newCommunityTheme-body);transform:translateZ(0);animation:ibDwUVR1CAykturOgqOS5 1.1s linear infinite}._3LwT7hgGcSjmJ7ng7drAuq,._3LwT7hgGcSjmJ7ng7drAuq:after{width:var(--sizePx);height:var(--sizePx)}._3LwT7hgGcSjmJ7ng7drAuq:after{border-radius:50%}._3LwT7hgGcSjmJ7ng7drAuq._2qr28EeyPvBWAsPKl-KuWN{margin:0 auto} The development of each character is handled extremely well, fleshing out the main cast with every side character contributing to developing Yuzu and Mei … Even though this was an elaborate ploy on Mei’s part to see how genuine Yuzu’s feelings were, there’s no real justification for it, and it just comes across as her being so apathetic that she doesn’t really care about who she goes out with. As I said, Yuzu is definitely a very naive character and the first scene in the show makes it abundantly clear that she never had any serious romantic feelings for anyone before. I do like the fact that Mei legitimately loves her grandfather rather than just respecting him as part of her family but that only does so much to help the series and it doesn’t really make him more interesting in any way. Mei also possesses two elemental kekkei genkai, the first of which is Lava Release.By combining the earth and fire natures, she can spit out acidic mud that can melt almost anything in its path. It would be a long wait for a relationship with much better characters but for one which has Mei in it, one which fails at getting the audience invested in so many ways, it’s just unreasonable to expect you’ll keep people interested for that length of time. All that potential means something to me and as a massive fan of the genre I want to be able to unreservedly endorse one of its flagship series. "The thing I think is cutest is you, Mei." The manga’s themes are explored much more deeply and the drama begins to feel more organic and based on the decisions of our leads. This is not going to be a video where I simply attack the show the entire time. Citrus is a series that is tragically misunderstood; a story with far more substance and depth than word of mouth would lead you to believe. The series even uses its premise better, asking more and more tough questions about what our main couple should do. Still they got married and had a kid called Shikadai Nara. That’s nice to see in any series but it matters even more here. This is all made worse by the fact that most the characters who are used as roadblocks just aren’t that good. This thing primarily exists because people asked for it and because it would be hard not to cover it given my incredibly strong yuri focus. However, it does make sense that they come from wealthy and powerful families given how prestigious the Aihara Academy is. Yuzu is quick to point out that she wasn't born an Aihara, revealing her original family name to be "Okogi". We can't decide which one is better. Additionally, the show does a good job of portraying her first love. ._3gbb_EMFXxTYrxDZ2kusIp{margin-bottom:24px;text-transform:uppercase;width:100%}._3gbb_EMFXxTYrxDZ2kusIp:last-child{margin-bottom:10px} In this show, there’s at least one sexual assault in every episode for the first 6 episodes, and there’s often more than one. ._12xlue8dQ1odPw1J81FIGQ{display:inline-block;vertical-align:middle} Kouichi met Mei in the hospital where he was being treated for a collapsed lung. Citrus is about relationships, first and foremost. Just two months ago, when I caught up on the manga for the sake of being fully educated before making this video, I ended up really liking the direction it went after expecting that I would hate it. I initially expected him to be a one-off character but Saburouta has shown that she intends to incorporate him into the story again. Not to imply that Yuzu is the only important character who’s enjoyable to watch from the very start. Again, the simple fact is that relationships should never be founded on abuse. When you make the protagonist come across as a complete idiot, it can be hard to care about their decisions or problems, as it often makes everything seem like their fault. Harumin then asks the same question to Mei, who tells her "we don't about anything in particular". This appears to be her preferred style while working as a sorcerer. So I find it interesting that at the start Mei wants to keep their relationship a secret, which is fine since it allows them to become more grounded in their relationship before having to deal with outside influence, yet by the end, as you mentioned, she almost wants to get caught. There are more ways to be creepy with a lesbian work than aiming it straight at men, and Citrus executes on many of those. ._3Im6OD67aKo33nql4FpSp_{border:1px solid var(--newCommunityTheme-widgetColors-sidebarWidgetBorderColor);border-radius:5px 5px 4px 4px;overflow:visible;word-wrap:break-word;background-color:var(--newCommunityTheme-body);padding:12px}.lnK0-OzG7nLFydTWuXGcY{font-size:10px;font-weight:700;letter-spacing:.5px;line-height:12px;text-transform:uppercase;padding-bottom:4px;color:var(--newCommunityTheme-navIcon)} This is less of a problem in the manga of course since the story continues there, but even then, things just took way too long. CitrusEpisode 4. They work well enough as introductory devices I suppose but they could’ve been made at least a little more engaging as characters. Matsuri is in disbelief and quickly eats the food before Nene can take a picture of it. As such, I’ll be putting my money where my mouth is, and in the next 2 weeks, I’ll be releasing 2 videos, yuri manga for beginners and yuri manga for non-beginners, where I’ll recommend at least 30 yuri series which are worth reading. However, she absolutely tries her best and the show never makes her seem stupid in her lack of knowledge. Even if the assault was absolutely necessary to the narrative here — which it isn’t — that would still be going way overboard. ANALYSIS - This is a strangely long bonus chapter, coming in at over twenty pages. It's nice seeing affirmation that Mei is just as committed to her and Yuzu's relationship. People dream up conspiracy theories to help make sense of things. What will become of Mei and yuzu's relationship after mei's dad comes home and catches them in a make out session. By spending more time on the characterization, perhaps by bringing the later volumes’ development forward, the challenges that face their relationship would at least feel like they have a point to them. Nene suddenly pipes up. From romantic to platonic to familial, the relationships and the characters are focused in on. We don't see Mei and Harumin interacting very often in the manga, so this bonus chapter is a treat. I’ve made it quite clear on my channel in the past that yuri isn’t a male-dominated genre and that while men certainly make up a large percentage of the readership, it’s hardly as if most yuri series are targeted specifically at men. As soon as the arc ends and she proposes a threesome, she becomes a great side character, but she should’ve been better from the start. The knowledge that these events happened makes it harder to enjoy moments like Yuzu and Mei seriously coming to a point of understanding in the final episode. I’d hardly say that the show feels tonally dissonant, at least most of the time. Mei Mei is a young woman with light peach skin and small, sharp dark brown eyes with thin eyebrows. She’s basically the epitome of a disaster lesbian. By the end of season 1, Alina isn’t in a relationship with anyone but in the books, she ends up married to Mal. She’s just too incompetent, walking around with her dog in her hands wearing a goth loli outfit. Harumin initially asks why Mei is interested in that but then answers the question, explaining that she and Yuzu only talk about "stupid things". She can be snarky, jealous, and at times overly aggressive. This can be quite aggravating as it feels very unnatural and makes a lot of the progress feel unearned. This is particularly true for the third arc, which really should’ve been deleted or at least totally changed to feel less out-of-place. This is a melodrama so it’s to be expected that there’ll be characters who are blatantly malicious but Matsuri just takes it too far at times. Yuzu gave Mei a tight hug "Always Mei, always" 1. In this video, I talked a lot about yuri as a genre and negatively compared Citrus to other works. Harumin tells Yuzu that she looks like an angel (presumably for ending the awkward dialogue) and the scene ends. ... You were warned. If the sequel is released, then no earlier than the fall of 2021.
