Kacey Musgraves: Pageant Material review – country princess files down her spikes 3 / 5 stars 3 out of 5 stars. June 23, 2015 @ I love Kasey Musgraves! ‘There’s too much “them”, and not enough “me”.’. I like to think of this album like what happens behind the curtain of beauty, womanhood, Southern social graces and small town simplicity. Last time out she sang “If I … I think you hit the nail on the head Trig, this one was pleasantly surprising. Not so much a fan of her live act/ cutesy Baby attire. I mean, even Chris Stapleton wrote Crash and Burn, Hangover Tonight and Something To Do With My Hands, and I’m pretty sure half this site would fight anyone who called him inauthentic, haha. “Pageant Material” cleverly critiques whatever connection supposedly exists between bikini-clad pageant participants and their social causes (“And it ain’t that I don’t care about world peace/But I don’t see how I can fix it in a swimsuit on a stage”). Directed by Jono Mitchell. I want to defend two songs that seem to be under attack a little. ”˜There”™s too much “them”, and not enough “me”.”™My problem with Taylor Swift”™s songwriting is the opposite: there”™s too much “me”, and not enough “them”. 8:22 pm. Sam Hunt hurts artists like Kacey Musgraves…and Chris Stapleton, whether they know it or not. Absolutely love the album. Both singles are great and pure country. I think these songs really show her maturing and expanding musically and lyrically. Had a hit so everyone is running to them like they have the magic touch . (Decca) Ally Carnwath. Review: Nobody Is a Glib Action Fantasy that Equates Manliness with Violence. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The instrumentation is sparse, and you can pick apart each instrument in the mix. In terms of true country music (and not this folk/americana stuff), this album is the best we have gotten so far this year. Yeah, scratch Ortega from that list. ‘So you”™re saying McAnally is probably a polish guy, and the overlap is that both Hunt and Musgraves (and Clark) like to work with him?’. A song that should end up as a single is “Dime Store Cowboy.” Kacey Musgraves is a lyrical writer for the most part, not a melody writer. I can hear the instruments and style as much as anyone else, so I hope she has mainstream success. People like personal details. And then it all dried up for over two decades, until a songwriter from Golden, Texas followed her dream and shared her talent with the world. And now that she's trying to go political and slamming the president, that takes away from the homespun country girl type singer she tries to portray in the music. I think Trigger’s assessment above is spot on and I agree with the rating . Kacey Musgraves, Pageant Material, review: 'good-natured rebellion' The plucky Texan singer blends crisp country licks with a witty live-and-let-live philosophy, says Helen Brown This is just like her last album in lyrics, slow tempo, etc. “Late to the Party” was a little unexpected, and despite it’s laid back, acoustic, and country-ish production, it captures more of a modernist, almost R&B sentiment that would be in alignment with the current mainstream country trends. Couldn’t one argue that buying singles instead of albums, is an example of something old becoming new again? Sam Hunt should not be able to hurt Kacey Musgraves, since they do not belong in the same genre. Review: Six Minutes to Midnight Smothers Its Historical Appeal in Melodrama. Kacey Musgraves is a musical genius! I really like Fine, High Time, Somebody To Love, Good Ol’ Boys Club, Miserable, and the Willie Nelson duet. If nothing else, this album is a good example of this. She has too much talent to have to rely on dumbed -down loud EDM- driven material . Artist: Kacey Musgraves. “There”™s a line on Musgraves”™ new album, on a song called “Good Ol”™ Boys Club”: Another gear in a big machine don”™t sound like fun to me. Is it made with steel guitar, electric guitar, or with synths? The show was great. 5:58 am. Or to give an example from Kacey’s past music, “Keep It To Yourself” (which was sonically my favorite song from her previous album). I guess what “airy” is is up for interpretation, but I think what you might be trying to say is these songs have space, meaning the drums and percussion specifically is very light, I believe “Fine” has some ukulele in it which is a very airy instrument. And this is not just from some 2nd or 3rd-tier star who is destined to be on the wrong side of seeing the attention she deserves come to fruition. But like many songs, it can be interpreted in different ways by different listeners. Her performing in baby doll dress is ridiculous for an “outlaw”. June 23, 2015 @ Charlie woods But I mean do these other writers slick back their hair and do a shot of vodka at the club before a session with him and then smoke a joint in a trailer and get out their other formula for her? I cannot tell you how many times I listened to contemporary bands and longed for yesteryear. 7:27 am. It’s in a Garth book called the Garth factor by patsy bale cox but he notes an album should be strategically placed song by song. Its craft ….knowing how to support the subject . My wife wasn't feeling well that day so I brought along my 14-year-old son who listens only to pop music...like most teenagers do. 10:04 am. So in that regard, what I am saying, is that I would think it would be difficult for these writers to offer up any authenticity into the songwriting for him that his music probably calls for just to even make it descent enough for him to do what he does. 7:29 pm. 11:36 am. She also has a great band and their collaboration is truly a gift to music lovers! It wasn’t exactly “blowing up”. Now going into this album, the lead single, “Biscuits”, admittedly left me fearing a hackneyed and tired album as a whole in that it smacked as cutting board leftovers from the sessions of her previous album…………..but we didn’t necessarily get that with “Pageant Material”. Cool Lester Smooth If that movie is about space-ships and interstellar threats , the person scoring it will bring all of his experience in to play in supporting that plot musically . Review: Kacey Musgraves is not here to flatter your progressivism ... “Pageant Material” is chock full of songs about maintaining one’s individuality in the face of pressure to conform. Musgraves co-wrote all 13 tracks and co-produced the album with Luke Laird and Shane McAnally. So if she stays close to her roots and doesn't wander off onto "Taylor Swift Avenue" should remain on my list of favorable artists. Pageant Material feels like the album Kacey Musgraves wanted to make. You need to listen to The Highway and 12 Stories, though, if you haven’t yet. Where Same Trailer, Different Park had to be a little more calculated and pragmatic, sneaking its traditional leanings between the lines, certain sections of Pageant Material are some of the most traditional-sounding material we’ve heard from a top tier star in memory. Every Godzilla Movie Ranked. Just my interpretation. Whew! A favorite of Northeast media elites who don’t pay attention to country music unless they can piggy back a professing of their political ideologies through it—they are already singing the praises of this album to the roof. What’s going to be the connection with radio listeners? More often than not , the initial idea ( coming from the artist themselves ) is only a starting point . They still have to make a living, and if coming up with a few crappy songs that become hits allows them to be able to keep doing the great songs that don’t sell as much I have no problem with it. In “Pageant Material,” she speaks about her inability to be fake on camera and play the game. Remember that Jack White produced for Loretta Lynn, so producing songs across genres isn’t too uncommon. Don't cheat yourself out of enjoying the best artist in decades. The difference between both are in the way the lyrics are presented, they're still good but it feels that Kacey and her writers could 've done better. When she came to Oakland, California I went to see her show. Review: Kacey Musgraves, Pageant Material. 6:28 pm. June 24, 2015 @ It would be greatly appreciated. There’s an innocence underlying the lyrics that is articulated so well by Musgraves’ sweet delivery and bright production……….reflecting on the youthful naivete of chasing dreams. Ther are 12 songs included on this CD, with one hidden track which is #13 with Willie Nelson! Fine and Late To The Party are beautiful. 6:28 pm. Regardless of how you feel about Kacey Musgraves, her music, her politics, or the ideologies she espouses, she symbolizes nothing short of a victory in the effort to save country music. That’s the area where I hope she continues to emulate Dolly, whose classic songs are full of heart and soul. Firstly, the lyricism came across as more clever than it actually was on paper. Musgraves loves to expound on how we should all keep our noses out of everyone else”™s business, but then feels inclined to stick her nose in the business of others with a song like “Miserable.”. I’ll see what I can do. Maybe that’s why Biscuts and Family don’t bother me so much. June 24, 2015 @ June 24, 2015 @ Trigger I have definitely been loving Family Is Family as well, such a classic country song. Cool Lester Smooth It”s a brilliant album closer and deserves ti be publicised like the rest of the songs. Underneath the album's sunny exterior lies a discontent with society's rules and expectations for girls and women without resorting to feminist platitudes. 11:12 am, I’d add Eric Church fans to a slightly lesser extent as well, regardless of how incohesive “The Outsiders” turned out. First off, damn, the amount of comments here is astounding. PS can she ever just write by herself or one other person? ACTUALLY know what they are doing …or The album made numerous "Best Albums of 2015" lists and was nominated for Best Country Album at the 58th Grammy Awards. I don’t know what people who have said otherwise are sniffing. A few of the songs on this album including Biscuts are Brandy Clark songs. hoptowntiger Thought it was really interesting in this new video that Kacey said she wrote “Fine” six years ago. June 24, 2015 @ A rich, enchanting collection of stories, confessions, and the occasional joke Read Review I don’t know if it was intended as a joke, but it didn’t listen as such, and colored the whole album for me as offensive, and very much lessened my respect for the man more than anything else he’s ever done, including the political rants in his most recent material. I’d take a song written by Sturgill or Jason Boland over this chick 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. I don’t hate her, I just don’t understand the hype, that’s all. The final song “Fine” might be Kacey’s greatest major label contribution yet. I love Kasey Musgraves! Of course, that's my opinion and I don't expect my son to agree at his age. Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2015. It’s quite reminiscent of Lee Ann Womack in the best way possible. Besides the enchanting singing, she masterfully entertained the crowd with her witty comments and stories. And secondly, much like Trigger emphasized, we didn’t get a lot of “me” on that album. 5:50 am. Last year I dug into Hank Jr.’s discography, specifically the Outlaw portion of his career starting with Hank Williams Jr. and Friends (still an underrated album and my personal favorite of his). Interesting to think about, actually. If that’s truly what you believe their mindset is then I guess that’s one thing. Jonathan They are so similar to the songs from her first album that caused me to not care for her originally. “Any industry has its shoo-ins and people that get in because they know somebody, or their dad worked here, whatever. Certainly the steel guitar is used very effectively in this regard on Pageant Material , as opposed to being a more featured solo instrument…..but the bigger contributor is what is referred to as a ” pad “. The irony in all of this pageantry is that Musgraves' second album is a big middle finger to her haters done with vaseline on her teeth. Also, I got a lot of “me” with “Miserable.” I felt Kacey was singing into a mirror, asking herself why she can’t be happy. I just don’t get it. Release Date: 07/10/2015. Great steel solo and very traditional sounding. She has a great style (and her clothing style is second to none). That’s fair. Let’s tap the brakes a little bit. Bocephus was putting down the more heavyset friends of the girls that would try and get him after a show, or girls he was hitting on. It helps creates the mood but the music can still move through it unobstructed . "Family Is Family" describes the futility of wishing we all had better relatives while "Fine" is an outstanding downbeat ballad about how Musgraves awaits the return of a long-gone lover. I am going to purchase this one. !” among most of the critical press and message boards related to country music…………………comes down to two things. Second off, I liked the album a lot. That’s how I try to explain it to those who are obviously sporting fan goggles and act like Musgraves is entitled to mass airplay. Her songs are so well written both musically and lyrically and so well adapted to the genre of country music, I really can't say enough. I also found it ridiculous that there was a report about the song “Good Ol’ Boys Club” being a diss of Taylor Swift because of the “big machine” line in the chorus. Great effort here. At least as good as her first cd. To be honest, in recent months, I haven’t been listening to much country music. Luv, luv Willie at the end. Required fields are marked *, Notify me of follow-up comments via e-mail. Same goes from family is family. Honesty is the best policy. In the liner notes she reveals that a stage mom who dissed her as a youngin' described her as a dime store cowgirl and suggests that a girl that she competed with in Little Miss Tater Tot was more Pageant Material than herself. Yeah, I’ve thought about that often, but the simple fact is that the album concept is a greater vehicle for an artist to express themselves and to make singles have more value. We have already seen her tackle the theme of small-town disillusionment in spades with “Merry Go ‘Round”. I like whole cd. June 25, 2015 @ Cool Lester Smooth Church has regularly remarked he is insistent on adhering to writing albums, and while he hasn’t always sticked the landing, it’s hard not to see it’s working when “The Outsiders” is still in the Top Ten going on seventy weeks into its chart run. So try to hear me now, because I think you’re missing the point. Best of 2015. I think all of her music sounds the same and is overly cliche. Spot on, Trigger, as usual. You’re speaking as if the way these songs were written belong down in the bottom of the barrel with stuff like Honky Tonk Badonkadonk. I have young writers bring solid ideas to our studio …then apply my/our knowledge and experience in terms of phrasing , grammar , internal rhymes , imagery , melody , use of alliteration, genre choices , vibe and whatever else the lyric /melody/themes seem to be looking for . I still listen to the first CD at least once a week. Then the album ends with a hidden duet with Willie Nelson on his song “Are You Sure.” It’s great to hear Willie in this context, but it sure is a shame the track is “hidden.” Assign your favorite conspiracy theory to that decision. As a copywriter, I was drawn to her first album by its evocative title ("Same Trailer, Different Park"). Its just weird to me that they would be able to make contributions drawn from any real life experience in two drastically different projects. Lester I hear you loud and clear. Have you heard the rest of the album? In fact these pads have been around forever in pop / prog pop / fusion-y jazz and , of course , movie scores. She aint no cowboy lol, pete marshall Oh, I’m not talking about Miserable at all. It still may not do well because at this point Kacey Musgraves has become typecast by many radio programmers, but I think it has a better chance than “Biscuits” did. Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2015. “By the way, Trigger, do you happen to know how these “airy” sounds are created? Perhaps they have a title and a direction or simply some phrases or a few points written down to illustrate where they want the lyric to go . I’m not saying ‘Miserable” is some horrible song. I don’t know that I would characterize it as a “this person sucks” song. And if that’s what you so believe then you’re consistent with that thinking and that’s fine. Noah Eaton I suspect that this may be the way for 21st century country. (Both of Musgraves”™ Grammy victories were over Swift.) I read this site all of the time and really enjoy the articles but I don’t think you’ve ever had a chance to talk about Corey smith. Her 2015 "Pageant Material" essentially picks-up where her debut "Same Trailer Different Park" left off in 2013. I near obsession with female musicians, especially those who write their own music, but nothing she does makes me want to hear more. This is good country music. How about she write a few songs solo instead of continuing to work w/ others. I sincerely wish Ms Musgraves more success in America and hopefully the whole world. But Pageant Material remains a solid effort, and delivered slightly above expectations. You may know all of this …but just to illustrate more completely what’s going on in live performance . From what I can gauge from fellow teen/college kids who love Kacey, “Dime Store Cowgirl” and “Die Fun” are getting much love. Personally, I was very excited when Leave the Night On (one of McAnally’s co-writes with Hunt) popped up on my radio station last summer, because it was the first new song on country radio I heard in a while that didn’t fundamentally suck as music, even if it definitely wasn’t country. She is an absolutely amazing lyricist and song writer. The only thing I take away from her is her look from a personal standpoint. Cool to hear that in a mainstream country song, especially a potential single. Applejack The writing and musicianship/engineering are also very good. But still you get this sense of judgement coming from Kacey that makes for an uncomfortable listen in places. But good music is good music. For me personally, it was a couple big risks short of what I would consider perfection for her, but still a record that people will have to consider one of the most definitively loyal pieces of art in the modern country era. Applejack And she’s not entitled to mass airplay just because fans and the press love her. And now that she's trying to go political and slamming the president, that takes away from the homespun country girl type singer she tries to portray in the music. Musgraves has yet to collect a second chart hit via more natural means of promotion. User rating, 5 out of 5 stars with 3 reviews. This album was a refreshing blend of classic country and contemporary themes that make Kacey Musgraves an extremely unique artist. The universality of specificity is a fundamental concept in songwriting and poetry. Also, once again, the production does get notably samey after a while. If that disgusting RaeLynn song comes on the radio, I’ll switch to the throwback hip hop station or the public folk station and be just as happy listening to “Dear Mama” or “Wasted and Rolling” (the genres aren’t what you would think, haha) as I would be listening to Dime Store Cowgirl or Traveler. June 23, 2015 @ You should look a lot more into Americana. I am Chinese and I don't listen to country music, but I am a fan of Ms. Musgraves. Pageant Material is the second studio album by American country music artist Kacey Musgraves, released June 23, 2015, through Mercury Nashville. June 24, 2015 @ I enjoy Kacey’s music for the most part, but am kind of turned off by this thread that runs through some of her songs. the Shakermaker That’s quite the swing from Kacey Musgraves to Sam Hunt. The song sounds like one of Loretta Lynn’s songs and im trying to figure out which one but im having trouble. When she came to Oakland, California I went to see her show. The songs are very very well done , if not quite as ‘ shocking ‘ or new-sounding as her last album .They are cleverly crafted , clearly delivered , and make good, strong points unique to most current fare .
